Best Fake Plants That Look Like The Real Thing, Even Though They're Artificial

Not everyone is blessed with a green thumb. And for others, the plants they love are toxic to their pets. (Or simply don't grow in their neck of the woods.) Designer and television host has never shied away from mixing in fake plants as part of his designs, particularly for clients in tough climates.   "This way you could transform a desolate desert" into whatever you want, he says. Welch doesn’t recommend purchasing any old plastic plant, though. You have to consider where you’d be placing it and read up on the materials it’s made from first.   Often, that might mean shelling out a few more bucks for the right faux plant, but Welch says the long-term savings make it worthwhile (e.g. no repotting materials, fertilizer, or plant sitters when you travel). When shopping for a fake plant, Welch suggests opting for silk if the plant will be at eye level (think: tall corner plants or coffee table shrubs). But if it’ll be up on a bookshelf, you can probably get away with plastic. Welch also urges people to stay away from plants that have fake river rocks glued to the inside of the pot, stems covered in plastic dew, or anything that looks "too perfect"—they’re dead giveaways that your plant is, well, not alive. You might also mix in a few real elements to trick the eye, says Welch. "You can sling some actual moss on top of the fake plant to give it the illusion that it’s real." Or, he recommends placing small, low-maintenance air plants near fake ones.

How to Pick the Best Artificial Plants for Your Home

Some decorators may tell you to avoid the fake stuff if you want your home to look classier. However, recent improvements in manufacturing and materials make artificial plants and flowers look just as lively as the real ones. Plants and trees make a home look more vibrant and alive, whether it be outside or inside. In fact, a lot of people would feel good when they see plants. However, taking care of live plants can be a hassle, especially for those who don’t have a green thumb. If you don’t want to deal with all the hassle of caring for real plants and florals, then there are many to choose from in the market. With various types of faux greenery available, buyers can find a perfect mix for their home. Also, there are health benefits that come from not being exposed to allergic particles when real flowers bloom and pollinate. If you want to accentuate a part of your home but it’s not practical to place live plants, then consider faux greenery and flowers. Here are some tips on how to get the best “fauxliage” for your home. Pay Attention to Detail When looking for an artificial plant, always pay attention to detail. A good faux plant should have variations in density, color, and texture, found in real plants. This means that the artificial plant should be intricately crafted, making it appear like a real plant with natural-looking features. Aside from lively features, you may also want to pick the latest types of faux plants to make your home sophisticated and modern. Examples of these are palms, succulents, potted herbs like lavender and rosemary, dahlias, sunflowers, hydrangeas, and other silk florals. Select an easy-to-arrange plant Faux plants should be easy to manipulate; it should allow you to bend its stems and branches so they can be exposed to natural light or fit into a container. To arrange petals, foliage, etc., you may check out some tips of real plants online. Also, when using artificial plants, you should get the right containers as well as accessories like real soil, stones, and sand. Only requires minimal maintenance Since you don’t have to water, fertilize, or prune, artificial plants are great for people who don’t have a knack for growing plants. However, some variants of faux greenery require a lot of dusting or wiping so make sure you pick one that only needs minimal maintenance. A good artificial plant shouldn’t take you long to clean it.
