As a landmark transportation hub linking China to the world, Shanghai Pudong International Airport required a one-of-a-kind indoor sky garden to blend traditional Chinese aesthetics with high-traffic commercial space demands. Haihong Corporation delivered a full turnkey simulated landscape solution for this 30,000 sqm zen garden, overcoming tight construction timelines, airport operational restrictions and extreme temperature hurdles to build a timeless oriental retreat inside Terminal 2.![]()
Overall Design: Three-Courtyard Traditional Chinese "San Jin" Layout
- First Courtyard – Shuijing (Water Mirror)
A serene reflective water pond acts as the garden’s centerpiece, mirroring simulated pine trees, bamboo groves and modern airport glass facades for a striking contrast between ancient oriental charm and contemporary architecture. Key elements include island plant beds, Taihu stone sculptures and winding water streams.
- Second Courtyard – Xunsong (Seeking Pines)
Centered on handcrafted simulated pine artworks, this zone features rock mountain cascades, curved walkways and decorative stone paving. Lush simulated moss and mixed foliage surround stone seating areas, creating quiet rest spots for transit passengers.
- Third Courtyard – Tanyou (Exploring Seclusion)
A hidden tranquil retreat fitted with exclusive VIP lounge zones, scattered stone benches and layered miniature landscape pockets. Dense simulated bamboo screens filter airport noise, delivering a peaceful escape amid the busy travel terminal.
Construction: Breaking Limits to Solve Airport-Specific Engineering Challenges
- Compartmentalized Nighttime Construction Under Live Operations
All installation work runs strictly from 00:00 to 05:00 daily to avoid disrupting daytime airport traffic. We split the site into isolated construction zones with safety barriers, ensuring zero interference with airport passenger services while accelerating progress.
- 72-Hour Modular Prefabrication System
Over 200 modular simulated tree frameworks are fully pre-assembled in our factory workshops before shipment. This off-site production cuts on-site assembly labor and time costs by 60%, drastically shortening terminal indoor construction cycles.
- All-Weather Extreme Cold Construction Guarantee
For low-temperature winter installation, we adopted -5°C frost-resistant specialized adhesive paired with hot-melt welding technology. This advanced process stabilizes simulated plant, stone and landscape structures, preventing cracking or detachment even under harsh cold indoor climate conditions.
Project Results: 30,000 sqm Oriental Aesthetics Sky Garden
- Zero maintenance: No watering, pruning or seasonal replacement required, perfectly suited for low-upkeep public airport spaces
- Long lifespan: UV-resistant, anti-abrasion simulated plants and rock materials hold vibrant colors year-round
- Space-flexible modular design: Customizable layouts matching any indoor large-scale commercial area
- All-climate stability: Resistant to air conditioning dryness, temperature fluctuations and heavy pedestrian traffic
